My main rule of thumb is that if the period instrument group is conspicuously noticeable as such, they're probably pushing it too hard. That said, some recordings sound better after you've adapted to them. Hogwoods's Mozart used to sound over the top, now it sounds (relatively) normal. Ditto his Haydn. His Handel is the best, no problem adapting to that. Some good examples: English Concert, Academy of Ancient Music (unless Manze is the leader), Gardiner. Some egregious examples: the Soloman Quartet, Trio 1790, some of Andrew Manze...
