Comparisons of Audiophile recordings...Which labels do it best?

I have many MoFi, DCC gold CD's and find them to be a very mixed bag. I just started buying some Japanese mini LP CD's to replace bad recordings of cherished music and in the five I have purchased so far, I am very pleased. I replaced my entire Cold Blood collection with Bomba Records (Japanese mini LP CD label) and the improvements are obvious. I now ordered four Steely Dan CD from a different Japanaese label and am hoping for the best. To get back to the Mofi recordings, I have many, some are nice improvements: The Band "Music from Big Pink", Steely Dan "Aja" and "Gaucho" to name a few positive examples. Others have been disappointing. I just bought Chuck Berry "St. Louis to Liverpool" and it is pretty lame (not the music the recording). It is worse than some of the old non audiophile versions I have. This is not a single event, I have many poor quality MoFi's. DCC is a bit more consistent. Most of them there is a slight improvement, just slight enough to wonder if the cost was worth it. It is a shame that the Japanese buy the recording rights and sell the music back to us for thrice the price. It is a telling commentary on the American approach to quality and value. Look at the toll this approach has taken on the auto industry. Opinions and relevant comments are welcome, especially information on other consistently good audiophile labels.
