Well, I guess the subject line sums up the question. I am fairly new to the wonderful world of classical music and have been reading Ted Libbey (NPR 350 essential recordings), the Penquin guide to classical music (2008) and the Third Ear. I find some concensus but not as much as I would have expected. I also read this site and the reviews on Amazon. Let's hear from you guys about who your most trusted reviewers are.
I also have experienced this weird phenomenon. I listen to NPR and hear great music. I write it all down and when I buy it and play it on my plus $100,000 system, it sounds lame compared to what I heard on my cheap 1996 VW car radio (stock). Before you start with the "there must be something wrong with your gear", other genres sound spectacular on my home system as do a small handful of my 500 or so classical cd's.
