Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

RE: Personally, I feel deeply sorry for people who can't enjoy their megabuck systems...

Alright, I'll jump in at no particular spot to address some on the comments on this thread. To all those who suggested I downgrade my system to make it sound better, no thanks. For those that assume because there are many bad classical recordings out there (about 1/20th of my collection is classical) I am not enjoying my system, wrong. It sounds phenomenal on the vast majority of my non-classsical CD's. The point of my annoyance with bad classical recordings is that I am trying to increase my exposure to this genre and am buying a lot of sonic sludge. Someone said that recordings were the culprit generally and that you should not try to improve your system to make bad recordings sound good. In my experience this conclusion is wrong. I have put a lot of money and effort into my system in the past three years and the results have been very gratifying. Recordings that I previously considered poor and listened to rarely, now sound very good. The recordings that were very good are now magical. I measure improvements to my system by the amount of recordings that I never listened to that I can now enjoy.
I have spent a lot of time reading on the Tube Asylum (you can discern the knowledgeable posters from the clueless quickly) and have amassed a collection of the best signal tubes (for my gear) available. There is always room for improvement but I am very happy with where my system is now. Those of you that enjoy your modest systems, that's great. You can put together a nice system inexpensively (think Chinese). No, it's not my system, there are lots of poor classical recordings that sound one dimensional (zero depth), and lifeless. By the way, I am not some wealthy snob (middle class, blue collar machinist) that throws money around on new $20,000 amps every other month. I have done lots of homework and made good decisions and bought used. Thanks for the well intentioned (some of it) advice.

Bart
