So in the approved CJ fashion I googled "Brahms" + "String Quintet".And came up with the small number of 168,000. Really "unknown".
Aside from the obvious Amazon etc. references to recordings, the first three pages came up with the following. Please note the term "Basic Repertoire" employed passim. I was prepared to concede that in this--relatively speaking--'land ohne kammermusik', the European fascination with these works may not hold; but, again, it ain't so. We're left with the 'cryogenic' hypothesis--and if you really insist on relying on a Cheney endorsement, well....
