Did I damage these Quads tonight??

Tonight I was listening to some Pink Floyd and some Eagles on the Quads. Twice....once in one speaker and once in the other....the bass all of the sudden turned to distortion....like a runaway train. I immediately eased off on the volume. Then it happened again in the other side. Did I damage these or was I just pushing the bass panels too hard and they gave me a sign to turn them down? Also....since this occured, the speakers sound quite rolled off to me. It's hard to know if this is a product of the bass distortion or if it's just that I'm losing touch with the sound because I've been changing amps so much tonight...but I guess my question is "how do you know if you arc a speaker"? Also...does bottoming out the bass in this fashion harm anything? This is so frustrating! These sound so good...but the bass is so disappointing. Is there anything I can do to improve it?
