RE: "Here is a mod that Wendell suggested", REALLY

This mod has been done before. I forget which thread, and the person who actually did it. The speakers were MG1's or MG2's, and he replaced the tweeter wires with a foil rebuild kit for MMG's or the likes. He posted that the results were lackluster performance wise (stock crossover stock bass wires). The sensitivity was greatly reduced (tweeters), and regardless of mylar back or front it did not sound right. I am sure that increased power, or a complete replacement of the wires (bass and treble) will make the speaker uniform with the increased power wold cure this issue, but you will need some huge power (think 1000+). I have been considering a foil rebuild on my tympani 1d's for some time now, but after hearing the results of that posters experiences I was somewhat less encouraged to try the mod but still pondering it. I have found a cheap source of foil to use for experimenting, the link is below. It comes in several sizes (both width and thickness). Using some petroleum jelly to stick it to some wax paper and a jig (or even a straight edge) with a razor blade, you could easily cut the foil out of 1 piece. You could then use the glue of your choice to apply the foil, and just peel the backing off and be done (maybe add a clear coat or something). If you had to adjust the resistance with a series parallel circuit, you could just make it a 2 or more part piece. With so much extra material, you would have plenty to experiment with and no waiting time and contact/shipping hassles. With tested width measurements (or verified by other users) much of the guess work would be removed from the equation. Just some of my thoughts though.
