I believe the width was determined via R&D, but… “He added that you have to use the same width aluminum foil they use, because they've optimized the width.” … & set that width in the chassis’ pole plate magnetic gaps, which I believe is the real driving issue here.
What I'm still curious about is...
1) If bass could ‘improve’ if 1.mil ‘teeter’ foil was on both sides of the mylar. Thus, halving impedance if the twin voice-coils are wired in parallel. And, greatly stiffening the diaphragm (area moment of inertia) for the longer wavelength sound-waves, especially compared to the mass added.2) U-turns: folding the foil twice (two right-corner turns), versus crimping the foil into a continuous curve.
