RE: Going from garden hose size to 24 gauge speaker wires

Hey Pete,

I agree it is not the standard. How can you send all this current to maggie if the wires are super thin inside??

Anyhow it doesnt matter. The thin magwire sounds fabulous and is so cheap that you could try it over and over and still not spend more than a few bucks.

For the pvc, you can get that at pretty much any hardware store in the plumbing section. I used to do that but it usually has writing on it. IIRC I bought some from McMaster.com and it was blank. They also have some foil too which you should get in the thinnest size you can (and do clean it with something that polishes metal). Magwire can be found at ratshack though you can get it many places. There are different insulations but I THINK the best is nylon of some sort.

The wbt bananas or dayton clones and Tech flex is found at partsexpress.com but if you buy from there click their link here:

The sand is reptisand and you can get that at any pet store.

I usually take the magwire and cut 2 strands longer than I need and tie one end to a door knob. I also tie some plumbers tape with the wire pair as well. The other ends of the wire and the tape which is a bit shorter than the wires gets put gently into a drill. The tape will stretch and if you pull it tight GENTLY you should have 2 wires with some plumbers tape on one side of the wire. Twist the wires slowly with the drill and you now should have two twisted magwires insulated in teflon. It is kind of magical when it comes together. I use the red wires from rat shack for this but you could use the thicker ones if you wanted.

I also do this because it can address directionality. I make sure one wire is a different direction. They come off the spool in one direction and I reverse one of the wires when I twist. That way the cable wont be directional. Either way you should mark the direction.

And do note that this twist just handles one conductor run. So the twisted wires carry the same charge. This is not exactly a twisted pair where the + and - are twisted around each other. The magwire insulation is really thin and twisting it might just cause a short so I dont use it like that. If there is a short it doesnt matter in my application though I tested occasionally and it is not shorted.

To get the insulation off the ends for soldering you need some sand paper though a solder pot is a nice luxury, and a must if you are doing anykind of big project. Well worth the money IME!

Some people just grab the magwire and wire it up. You COULD do that and I would try it like that first to see if it is for your system. That is not the best config but will give you a good feel of what it provides.

Do be careful though as it is a very very very revealing wire and well if you have weaknesses you may just well hear it. CLEAN is a great word for it. Some systems might not like that kind of clarity though I think it is a must, and might just show you how much a lot of cables muck things up. Bass will also be different. Not smeared. It will take you a while I bet to get used to that. Burn in does happen with this cable so be patient. Once you go thin it will be hard to go back to the thick stuff I imagine.

And once you decide your system likes this, you can always use better materials like silver or better copper.

Runs should be short, say under 8 ft.

Enjoy!
