Phanthom centre or not?

I have a pair of 3.6 which I use for 2ch listening. Right now I am in the process of active bi-amping them.
I also watch many movies (my trade) on a 15 foot screen. I've been using MC1s as central (on each side of the screen) and MMGWs as surround for a 5.1 system. Each pair has its own stereo amp.
I read that many people here employ their main speakers as phantom centre. It made me curious. So I did some testing with my 3.6s, which are placed about 5 foot off the back wall, with no MC1s. The sound stage seems fine to me, no hole in the middle.
I am now caressing the idea of having just 4 speakers (+ sub) for movie playback: 3.6s at the Front and MC1s at the back. It would make my life easier with my amps and my customized HTPC (it follows cMP audio project).
What do you think of it? Do I really need a centre if it can be done better by my main speakers?!
Thanks
