REL B1 multi-sub set-up for 5.1

Thor,
I do not have REL's actual frequency response, but I have a B1 to match a pair of 3.6.
The manual claims that sub goes down to 12Hz...
In practical terms I can tell you that it can match Maggies very well with careful positioning and adjusting.
For multi-channel listening you should have High Level AND Low Level connections. You can have them both balanced. The first one is through their Neutrik Speakon plug which you may eventually replace with a custom made one.
The following notes are directly from a REL tech advisor. They are useful for setting up subs (any type really) in a 5.1 enviroment.
I hope you can make good use of it.
------------------------------------
1. front sub should be in a corner at the front facing the opposite corner
2. rear sub should be in the rear facing the front sub
3. centre sub should be near the centre speaker
4. each set of speakers and sub should be worked on individually disconnecting all other speakers at that time
5. B series
6. make sure the speakers are set to large or full range on you’re AV amp

High level setup:
· Place sub in corner
· Plug in Neutric cable on B use the un balanced input
· Turn up high level gain to aprox 12 o’clock
· Turn up coarse two clicks on R this is crossover which you set at 12 o’clock
· Start Sneakers track “Cosmo”
· Little tip if you have a/b repeat on you’re DVD set the cd for the first 15 seconds
· Flick through mode finding the loudest volume on R this is phase 0/180
· Move sub laterally away from corner millimetre by millimetre looking for the point when then bass level rises and also becomes lower in depth
· On the rear right hand corner next move the sub like a spot light again looking for the same improvements as above
· Now drop the high level gain and the crossover to zero
· Now start bringing up the high level gain until you here the sub just coming up to the speakers this maybe easier with some one in the listening position
· Now use only the fine setting clicking up until like a camera lens the bass not becomes focused i.e. more defined on R this is cross over
· Repeat this on all subs before connecting the low level lead to the main sub and the rear sub

Low level setup:
· you will need a film called “ U571” at the part of the film where the sub rise out of the sea and splashes down twice this can be found just after Bill Paxton and Mathew McConaughey have a conversation in their cabin and before they are sat at the table eating a meal aprox 31.03 minutes into the film. It’s a very short piece so you may need to a/b it
· now just bring up the low level gain until you hear the hull of the sub hitting the water
· repeat this for the rear sub again having a second pair of ears in the listening position will prove a lot more easy
· you are now done happy listening
