I don't remember seeing any as a kid or my parents ever talking about them, but now I see them, albeit infrequently.
They always appear like a stray dog at first, then it dawns on me ...that's a coyote. I once saw one trotting through the backyard with a house cat in its mouth. Folks should keep their cats indoors, especially since we have bobcats too.
I'm happy to have them around ...less mice is a good thing. I like the hawks in the neighborhood for the same reason.
Like you, I hope the one you found was not poisoned ...or shot. Could possibly have been hit by a car and just walked until it couldn't anymore?
