Re: for something different....

I've had some stuff chromed a few years back. Most re-chrome shops could care less as to what is on the metal. They'll strip it themselves. They are also happy to fill extra holes etc.

I have finally found a way to strip the grungy bells on vintage iron. Should work fine on the MQ bells too. I previously used a wire buffing wheel - with occasionally cursing, bloody fingers, and wire spinters. I now just heat them with a propane torch till the paint burns off. The ash then wipes off easily. Gets rid of wax, varnish etc. Best done outside however, as it really can stink. Then I typically re-prime and paint. Some of the hammertone paints give a very nice finish. Let the bells air-dry for 24 hours then bake in an oven (also stinks) for a hard enamel like finish.
