Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

These Altec Valencias are fatiguing!....advice? Tweaks? etc..

I just got a pair of Altec Valencias. Wow...what a speaker. They have many strengths. The downside is that I find them to be fatiguing. They don't sound bright...to the contrary, they sound warm and smooth...but they are still fatiguing. They have a presentation that is "in your face" and they tend to SHOUT at me. My other speakers are several pairs of vintage Tannoy and some EV coax. The Tannoys are forward, but nowhere near as hard to tolerate than the Altecs. I am using a Fisher X-202-B integrated tube amp and I've tried experimenting with the roll-off controls on the speakers, etc. I suspect that part of the problem is the ringing horns. I have some automotive stick-on dampening material that I've thought about treating the outside of the horns with, but I have yet to experiment. I am seeking advice here first. What can I do to tame these beasts? They're damn close to being the perfect speaker for me...if I could just make them calm down a tad.
