Recording engineers are supposed to be engineers, not just knob spinners. They should regularly conduct tests to catch problems. It is common for equipment to gradually deteriorate. Eventually, deterioration will become obvious, but it may be subtle and even a good listener may miss it on a bad day. This may not be a problem to an Audiophile, who can fix his equipment when it bothers him and then listen happily. This won't work if poor equipment is used to make a recording, since the recording will still be bad after the equipment is repaired.
In some cases, of course, circumstances conspire to ensure there will be problems that can not be overcome in the available time with available equipment.
