I found the Linn Mahler 2 (192/24 format) to have very good sound quality, if not exceptional. If you are having sound quality problems playing back this recording I would give serious thought to investigating how your playback chain is voiced. As to Zander's performance, it was in the "middle of the pack".
After reading this thread and before posting, I listened again to the Linn recording as well as a 1958 recording of the M2 by Scherchen, in a two track tape transfer by HDTT. (This performance on LP was my original introduction to the symphony back in the early 1960's.) All things considered, both recordings were good and both performances were good, but neither were what I would call "magical". In general the listening experiences were notable by how little recording technology has progressed in over half a century.
