Purchased the Philips SACD 1000 from Tweeter back when they were selling them for $399. Started reading about their failure rates but wasn't too worried. Philips then sent mailing to see if I wanted extended warranty. I never purhcase extended warranty knowing that it nevers pays off, but in this case I jumped at it after reading about the failure rate.
Well sure enough, the unit died and I contacted Philips, who told me to drop it off at their designated 3rd party service center. The first one couldn't fix it and they then sent me to another who, said they couldn't replace the parts since it wasn't available. I then contacted Philips to see what my next steps should be. The extended warranty indicated that if they couldn't fix the unit that a like unit would replace it. Well, I called Philips and almost fell off my chair when they said if I would be satisfy if they just sent me a check for $1955. I would've been happy if they just gave back my original purchase price. This is the one and probably only time where extended warranty paid off.
