Soca is a subgenre of calypso that places greater emphasis on the music and danceability. The focus of (traditional) calypso is more on the lyrical content. The originator of soca -- now deceased -- was an artist from the island of Trinidad by the name of Shorty, who blended elements of SOul music with CAlypso. You may remember the Buster Poindexter (David Johannson) hit of the 1980's, "Hot, Hot, Hot." The original was written and performed by an artist from the Caribbean island of Montserrat by the name of Arrow. The Poindexter cover was a literal carbon copy of the original.
