RE: 32 bits = exaggerated marketing claim

Oh, I personally don't think so. I don't think we've come to the asymptote for *anything*. Do you think a current BMW is a better car overall than the equivalent model 10 years ago?

No, there is still much progress to be made in the field of audio. I think for a while there was a "flat spot". Some companies got a good reputation by making standard circuits with high-quality parts. But that can only get you so far. To keep improving things, you need to keep pushing the envelope.

Parts are one way to get there, as Alex as found the 4397 to sound better than the 4396. But there are still new circuit topologies, improved grounding schemes, cryogenic treatments, et cetera, et cetera. I know that the products we make are much better than the ones we made 10 years ago, whether they are digital or analog. And I have no doubt that we will continue to create meaningful audible improvements in the future as well.

If nothing else, we can alway figure out clever ways to bring the performance of higher-priced products to lower price points.

About the only field that I can think of that truly reached an asymptote is violin making. Presumably nobody has surpassed the works of the masters from 400 years ago. But maybe in another 50 years, someone will figure out a way to best even those instruments.
