When I tested my wife's Steinway B live vs. recorded from the same listening position there was no discernible difference in tone quality, except possibly the lowest three notes on the keyboard. (Which weren't actually used in any of the music she played, just with scales.) Because the piano was in the corner and the Snell AIII's were in the center of the back wall, it is possible there was a slight bass boost acoustically to the piano that I had not been able to compensate by precise positioning of the microphones. (It took several hours of setup on my part to find suitable positions for the microphone and almost exhausted my wife's patience.)
