RE: Lightning and Electronics, Exhibit 'A'

A nearby lightening strike is like an EMP pulse. If sufficiently strong and sufficiently close by, it can destroy equipment that is not connected in any way. I had a friend who lived on a pinnacle and had four brand new PCs destroyed by a nearby strike. They were in the original packing boxes which had never been opened. Last time I visited him, he was doing his best to make sure this wouldn't happen again, and this included putting a grid of lightening rods and grounding wires around the entire frame of the house, turning the building into a Faraday cage.
