The title is misleading of the "article". It is unlikely he was doing this just so that he could stay conscious. During neurosurgery, patients are typically awake, which they want because they will be stimulating part of the brain to test particular functions before they decide which tissue they can spare.And note, they're operating on his right hemisphere, which typically is going to be involved in music related function. If they stimulate the correct part of his brain while he is singing/playing, they could disrupt particular functions and know instantly that they had done so.
