"Can you provide some examples of ss amps/preamps that you are referring to? I'm wondering how much $$$ is required to get ss that doesn't sound like ss - especially when BOTH amp and preamp are ss."
CRIMSON 710 PREAMP ($7K), 640 AMP. ($6K)
BLUE CIRCLE BC109 PREAMP ($4617 OR $7695), BC1022 ($4795) AND NSP ($9995) AMPS.
YOU CAN MIX THESE. I FIND THE CRIMSON PRE ON THE BC AMPS A FINE MATCH. I'M NOT YET HEARD THE BC109 PREAMPS, JUST A PROTOTYPE A FEW YEARS AGO.
"I've been using a ss amp combined with a tubed pre in my system for decades. The reason is simple. I've yet to hear a tubed amp that I can *not only afford to purchase but also afford to stock and restock with good tubes* which provides the kind of bass impact my ss amp does with my speakers. Nor have I heard a ss preamp *I can afford* that provides the tonality/timbre/dimensionality that my old fashioned tubed pre provides."
MOST PEOPLE FEEL THEY "NEED" TO PUT A TUBE PREAMP ON A SOLID STATE AMP TO HUMANIZE IT. THEY'RE AFRAID OF COMMITTING TO ALL SOLID STATE BECAUSE THE SOUND OF (AT LEAST SOME) TUBES HAS BEEN THEIR NORM FOR SO LONG. (I SAY SOME REFERRING TO HYBRIDS.)WITH THE RIGHT SS AMP I DON'T FIND THIS NECESSARY ANY LONGER. ALL THE TUBE AMP DOES IS SOFTEN, CLOUD, AND IN SOME CASES SLOW THE AMP'S PRESENTATION. NOT EVERYONE AGREES WITH ME ABOUT THIS, OF COURSE. OLD HABITS (MAINLY HAVING TO DO WITH COMFORT) DIE HARD.

- Thanks. BC products I've heard (ss and tubed) haven't knocked me out. I'll see if I can hear the Crimson pre/amp. nt - Rick W 11:17:04 06/22/14 (0)
