The UPS Store is not.

I had one of those experiences today that need to be shared, perhaps only for the catharsis involved. A business that calls itself The UPS Stores is not. It is loosely affiliated with UPS, mainly to attract/lure business; but when push comes to shove, as it did today, it’s not. If you ship through UPS online with the intention of taking your package to The UPS Store instead of having a UPS truck pick it up at your store/house, your receipt will tell you in fairly fine print that no matter how valuable your item is and how much you insure it for, it’s only really insured for $1000. That’s their ‘limit of liability.’ Even though they will charge for any amount of insurance above $1000 you innocently request!

That is a fraction of what my shipments generally cost and of what I insure them for. I have been shipping audio gear like this for ten years, never noticed the fine print, never had an issue. Nobody at The UPS Store ever told me, as they took in huge boxes marked “fragile/audio equipment,” that it wasn’t really covered for the insured amount. Why should they? Then I’d take my shipping business elsewhere.

So today, while admitting that they had done $2250 worth of damage to my amplifier and letting me file detailed estimates of damage done, cost of repair, done a detailed inspection on site (albeit delaying the inspection for two weeks because the inspector was “on vacation”), UPS told me, sorry dude you get $1000 period because that’s what our rules say (if you’re dumb enough to use The UPS Store). None of their dance of collecting information meant anything. It was likely some sort of exercise to create an impression they were taking my claim seriously, to keep me from leaving when they finally gave me the bad news. Nice try, UPS. I’m gone.

So beware shippers: The UPS Store is not.
