RE: Not so...

"I have Quicksilver amps and the manual states not to operate without speakers hooked up.Go figure?"

The manual is wrong and/or the amp is poorly designed. The problem is instability that creates oscillations and this can be corrected by adding a simple Zobel network in parallel with the output, as was the case with my Citation II. This provides a small high frequency load to prevent oscillations when the speaker is disconnected. If an amplifier is not safe without a load then a loose connection might destroy it. Personally, if it were my amplifier and it were under warranty I would be sorely tempted to run it without a load to see what happens.

While I've never had an audio amplifier fail due to a missing load, I did have a VHF aircraft transmitter blow the output stage due to a loose antenna connection. This piece of junk came with a manual that warned that the output stage would be damaged if the transmitter were run without an antenna connected. The company went out of business after their factory burned to the ground. (Reach your own conclusion as to the cause.)
