I used to disconnect and reconnect my speaker wires all the time, although only when the music was paused as I didn't like to hear loud clicks, etc... If an amp is damaged by being powered up while not connected to a load then in my book the amp is a piece of junk, no matter how nice it may sound prior to the point where it breaks.
