Nobody is sure about this. It's probably the central issue in high end audio. My own view on this is that because we don't seem to be able to get all that we want of a live experience of music through recordings and high end gear, we develop tricks to compensate for that. Very good tricks in some cases. Each trick goes after some aspect of Reality that escapes us. Designers choose the missing thing they believe is most important, the thing we can least live without. And no, no one has come up with THE trick that gets 'em all!
If we truly can't get it all w/o tricks, then I can't argue with using them. if we had the technology to get it all -- if it were technologically possible to get it all, there wouldn't be such a wide variety of gear and probably not even an Audio Asylum. I guess we could argue about what the best implementation of the agreed upon perfect technology is. Yeah, we'd find something.
