The economic term for this is "price discrimination". By segmenting the market it is possible to charge wealthy customers more than poor customers. If this is skillfully done it can benefit the seller, the poor customers and the rich customers.
There are poor audiophiles out there. Some of the download sites cater to them by offering deals, including charging the same price for all formats when a new album is released. Some download sites offer substantial bonuses and discounts to repeat customers. I don't think it is possible to look at quoted prices and get an accurate picture of the marketplace.
