"Put it this way I'd much rather have music involvement be a distraction to my analysis of recording quality and performance. IMO there's not much worse than a system that allows recording attributes distract from the enjoyment of music."
I have no problem with bad recording attributes detracting from enjoyment of music, provided that this happens with a small minority of my recordings. I am willing to accept poor recordings being unpleasant if the tradeoff is that excellent recordings sound truly realistic.
I estimate that poor sound quality interferes with my musical enjoyment for less than 10% of my record library. There are several reasons for this. First, I have voiced my system so that it the vast majority of recordings sound good, for example, neither dull or bright. Second, I select recordings whenever possible for both musical interest and competent sound quality, avoiding some record labels entirely. Third, I have practiced focusing my attention on what's important to me at the time. When I am listening to music I try my best to ignore sound quality issues. When I am changing or adjusting my system I concentrate on sound quality. When I am remastering recordings sometimes I concentrate on musical content and sometimes sound quality, making multiple passes where necessary.
