Trying to delve into previous owners experiences is not justified research when looking to buy used items. Getting a serial number and checking service history with the manufacturer is fine, and recommended. However, tracking down old owners is borderline psycho behavior, and I would also tend to snub this potential buyer.
There are red flags to look for as a buyer and a seller, and a potential buyer looking for personal information of previous owners is a HUGE red flag to the seller to avoid that buyer. If you feel this is justifiable behavior, I would suggest that you avoid the second hand market and just buy everything new.
