This has fascinating reference to audiophilia. Some of us, designers and customers, though we're not likely to admit it, fall in love with the personality of some gear, its uniqueness. Others doggedly pursue gear w/o personality in pursuit of reality.
When I say we're reluctant to admit this, I'm thinking of, for example, Peter Qvortrup, who designs some of the most appealing equipment on the planet but who insists his goal is objectivity. My assumption all along has been that for Peter, beauty is truth, so there you are. The most beloved equipment, like works of art, has always had a distinct personality. Beloved does not equal best but it does tend to equal beauty. Miguel of Tocaro and Peter More of Crimson both believe that truth is beauty. Plato agrees.
Lucky are those like Neill who have both ideologies living in their homes.
