RE: Thoughts Off the Cuff............

Todd, I couldn't agree with you more !! And also with your earlier 2001 posting where you say:-

> > > "I am now convinced that the proliferation of digital devices (audio, computers, processor-controlled devices, etc.) has corrupted our perception of music. EVEN WHEN IT'S ANALOG!!! It seems that we are producing so much RFI, as a byproduct of the digital age, it seems to corrupt even analog versions of the music. But when analog music played on a system independent of the electrical AC mains, and devoid of a digital source, even if it's a battery-operated boombox, the music regains much of the old magic!!

I really feel like a wacko stating this," < < <

And :-

> > > "So I ask, what in the heck is going on??" < < <

What I don't understand, especially regarding people who have been professionally involved in audio for such a long time, is why THEY are not saying exactly the same as you AND saying it as far back as you were !!

During the last 50 years we have gradually swamped our living and listening environments with electro-magnetic energy, RF energy, micro-wave energy etc, and more and more man made materials and objects.

To put it into perspective.

In the late 1940s, and at the beginning of the 1950s, in the UK, the house we lived in had electric lights, a radio, an electric toaster and a one bar electric fire. THAT was the extent of our electrical appliances. No TV, no electric vacuum cleaner, no electric iron, no refrigerator, no electric washing machine etc. Now, in 2014, look at what modern living has encouraged us to introduce into our living environments !!

Can I refer specifically to your sentence:-

> > > "I am now convinced that the proliferation of digital devices (audio, computers, processor-controlled devices, etc.) has corrupted our perception of music. EVEN WHEN IT'S ANALOG!!! " < < <

Can I ask you to consider the concept that all this has created such adverse conditions, in our living and listening environment, that we (human beings) are having to struggle to cope with it all - and in this process of 'having to cope' are under such tension that the very resolving of the complexities of music we are attempting to listen to becomes more and more difficult ?

The listening environment is now considerably different to what it was 50 years ago.

Referring again to your comment "> > > "So I ask, what in the heck is going on??" < < <

Can I ask you to 'throw an intellectual switch' and look at something in a different to the way you would normally ?

That the electro-magnetic energy generated, yes, a lot of the time by the very audio equipment, that the RF energy generated, yes, a lot of the time by the very audio equipment, microwave energy etc are having an adverse effect on the listening environment and not (as so often presumed) having an adverse effect on the audio signal travelling through the audio equipment. That it is us (human beings) who are the ones 'doing the reacting' to the adverse environment.

Then, many of people's reported experiences with some quite unusual devices and techniques begin to make more sense.

Things like :-

Schumannn resonance device.
Stein Music Harmonizer.
Demagnetising
Cryogenic freezing
The tiny ART devices
Crystals.
Chemicals
Different colours
And so on !!!

All unusual. All of them not conventionally associated with matters audio but all having been described as "improving the sound" as in one, more or all of the following :-

> > > "Dynamics, clarity, palpable presence, excitement, definition, air, decay, extension, articulation, less distortion, louder, quieter, 3D soundstage, natural, rich, texture, warm, fast, transmission, timbre, immersion, space, tactile, engagement, propulsion, ease, etc… everything is there in abundance… everything is here." < < <

None of the devices or techniques described above can be creating ADDITIONS to the musical score (of say Dvorak's New World) over and above what is already encoded on the CD or other source. I will repeat that again so that no-one is in any doubt where I am coming from. You cannot create additional musical score to what is already on the source. So that means that the devices and techniques listed above, in being described as "improving" the sound must be allowing more of the already existing musical information to be better resolved. Which, in turn, means that 'something', prior to using those devices and techniques, must have been preventing the resolving of much of the musical information which was already available !!!
