In 1970, my very good McIntosh 6100 & Advent based system cost around $1200-1500 and my Volvo 122 S station wagon cost $3,000. My current Volvo wagon V70 cost $37,000. Doing the dubious extrapolation, that means a comparable audio system 'should' cost around $18,000. I could sell you a system for a bit less than $18,000 that would kill my 1972 system. Old dollars, new dollars. The older we get, the more out of touch we get about dollars and prices. I should know, I'm older than you are.And $30,000 for a phono stage is beside the point, just as Audio Note's M8 preamp for $53,000 is. The number you should be looking at is Audio Note's M2 phono stage for $4000 or AR's LP1 for $2200. There are $30,000 and $53,000 phono stages because your designated 1% will pay for them. AR and AN would be foolish not to build and sell them if there's a market for them. They are the products that keep the companies in the black so they can make $4,000 phono stages. We should be grateful to the 1% for their charity.
Relax and keep your eye on the proper ball. There's plenty of great musical sound out there at a reasonable price, even if it's not a 1972 price...
