I always begin that reflection with the question, What leads us to believe that giving things away, purifying our lives, moving away from civilization, reducing, reducing, reducing -- all negative moves -- will lead us to a positive place? What if it just leads us to am empty place? The answer, presumably, is that you'd have to believe that the empty place would have something concrete there for us, something to replace all of the things we have gotten rid of. If you don't believe that, you could be in for a big disappointment. Because it is entirely likely that what's on the other side of the eye of the needle is empty space. And there you'd be without your camel.
