Computer audio is a frontier I have not yet encompassed. LOL! I'm stuck in the 20th century, I like tubes and vinyl. I do own a nice CDP, but I haven't progressed into computer audio yet. I wouldn't really even know where to start. Internet tuner?
I also do a lot of research, mostly consumer review and opinions, as I've found those to be far more reliable than professional reviewers or salesmen opinions. As I said, I can't try everything, but I do like to play with toys, so I have to search to narrow down the choices. ;)
Time and subtlety are definitely two factors that can make it challenging. The shorter the time gap the more able I am to discern sublety. I admit that I do not always hear much difference. Also, a lot of times the differences may be split. I like the tonality of Brand X better, but I prefer the soundstaging and imaging of Brand Y. If there is not much difference, I may make my choice based on ergonomics, looks or price. What I usually do then is keep what I consider the best, sell the other, and buy Brand Z.
Eventually I find one that will fit in just right and everything will sound great. However, then I will eventually buy something out of boredom that will screw things up until I make the accompanying changes that will make me happy again. Then I will change it again.
Sheesh!! I'm beginning to think I don't enjoy being happy. ;)
