So I use what I refer to as the Audiogon Buy N' Try method. I've been disappointed too often bringing home stuff that sounded good in the showroom, only to find it didn't sound the same in my room/system. After taking big losses on those decisions, I decided to switch to the buy n' try method. I still research to somewhat limit my options. Obviously I can't try EVERYTHING.
Right now I'm auditioning speaker cables. I currently have 5 pair of speaker cables in my home, 3 of which have used prices between $500-$1000. I also sold two pair of speaker cables in that price range this year already. When I find something I like I'll stop and move on. I remember one time, about 6-8 years ago, I had 4 preamps in my home with a list prices between $7-10K. There's nothing like being able to compare two items side by side in your own room/system, with your own recordings and ears. Keep the winner, sell the loser. I certainly do not make any money, but I do try to minimize my losses, even if that means I have to wait a couple of months for an item to sell.
Another reason it takes me longer to sell is because even though I still buy on Audiogon, I do my best to avoid selling on Audiogon, due to the fees. I have moved quite a bit of gear through the Trader here and US Audiomart, but it doesn't move nearly as fast as it does on Audiogon. Ocasionally I'll break down and list stuff on Audiogon, but I hate to do it.
