There are three types of humidifiers. cool mist, evaporative, and warm mist. The cool mist type vaporizes the water into a fine mist and disperses it into the air. It is this type that causes white dust from dissolved minerals in the tap water. The evaporative type humidifiers employ a fan that blows air through a wet element, picking up moisture on the way, and the warm mist type uses a heating element to create steam. The latter two types do not result in white dust deposits. I have used all three types at some time.
