"Problem with smooth or silky IMO it just doesn't represent how things sound in real life [!!!] - pretty damn rough and edgy if you ask me."
Best argument for your general case is the diffculty in describing 'live' ("in real life") sound. Sit in a concert hall and try to describe the sound. In most cases (exceptions being HALLS that have a characteristic sound), we don't hear sonic characteristics we can isolate and describe. We just hear 'the whole damn thing.'
I find that's also the case with some very good gear: the harder it is to ascribe specific characteristics to, the better it likely is. And this is not an argument for gear that has a conspicuously cool, neutral sound. Because conspicuously cool is a characteristic!
Of course, our expectations in a concert hall are different too: we take the sound for granted and so are less aware of it in itself. Also true in a car!
