I was wrong about two things...

When I'm wrong, I like to admit it.

A fellow AA member (see below) said to me, 'why not a used amp?' I thought, you know, he's right because the Chinese 4-tube amps are just Dyna-clones and there are a lot of used Dynas that are completely refurbished (not modified). You can occasionally find them on the AA and many times on eBay.

That would cut approximately $1000 off the price of my high-end on-the-cheap system.

Secondly, I was wrong about the cables, too.

Now that you've saved $1000, go to Home Depot, buy the Halloween extension cord, bring it home, take your Sharpie and make your arrows on the length of the cord, cut the ends off, and cut it in half.

Kava Kid says you don't need to remove the third wire. I'll defer to him.

Wrap the cord up, go online and find the closest cryogenic lab to you. If you're in a major city with more than one, call around and get the best price for cryogenically freezing both cables and then take them to be frozen.

When you bring them home, the difference in sound is amazing - way better than my original suggestion of the refrigerator burn-in method! Silky-smooth, non-fatiguing highs; cleaner bass.

In the Absolute Sound, in a cable shoot-out, the Halloween extension cord came in above some very expensive cables. I think the cryogenically frozen ones would score even higher.

Also, if you're handy, you could solder on some RCA plugs and make yourself a 6" patchcord from it. They're not shielded like a patchcord, but it doesn't seem to matter.
