Yes, some components just don't seem to like balanced power. I would say look at the EMI/RFI filters used to isolate outlet banks in some of the factory-built balanced power units as possible culprits in affecting the sound. In my experimentation with different EMI/RFI filters (Corcom, Qualtek, etc.) I found they reduced transparency. I know they don't operate in the audio frequency range but that was my experience in listening tests with the filters in the circuit.
I also eliminated GFCIs (like those used in the Equi=Tech factory-built balanced power units and other brands. I've taken apart old GFCI receptacles and the internals only add crappy junctions/contact points. IMHO there are better products than Leviton GFCIs that can be used for safety like Carlingswitch earth leakage breakers for example.
