Re: "Satisfaction will depend on what you expect your system to do for you."... No argument there!...

I was interested in your comments because I have listened to AN gear a lot. I agree with you on the strengths you list but I would not characterize what I have heard as lacking in inner detail, soundstaging or imaging.

I guess its possible that we just hear differently or that you are familiar with lot of high end systems that I have not heard but looking at your system details, I see another possible explanation.

I see that you have AN J's mounted on 2-post Skylan stands.

A couple of months ago I did some listening to my Snell K's and AN K's on 2-post Skylan (plastic) stands and on 4-post Audio Note (steel)stands. Each stand was filled(with sand I believe)and was quite well damped.

With either set of speakers, the difference the stands made astonished me. With the Audio Note stands, not only was the bass cleaner and deeper but the whole range became clearer and better defined. On the Skylans the sound was OK to my ear until you heard them on the AN stands and the sound quality moved to a whole new level. One way to express the differences other than bass would be exactly the comments you made "lacking in inner detail, soundstaging or imaging".

I believe the reason was that the AN stands were far more rigid than the Skylan stands so since then, I have set up home made stands under my Snell E's that provide direct support from Blu-Tack under the corners of the speakers to spikes that go through the carpet to the floor. With 25lb of sand in each stand, pushing on the E's feels like pushing on an extension of the concrete slab. It seemed to make a big difference to the sound of the E's too but I have not had the same A-B opportunity to compare with a different stand.

Bottom line is that if you have not done so, I suggest that you try some AN stands (or other equally rigid and well damped stands) and see if you still feel the same way about how your AN system sounds. BTW, if you are on a floor that can flex noticeably, (eg some wooden floors), then I think that a deeper front to back spacing between floor spikes will also help.

Regards

David
