Re: When did the first CD player hit the market?

I have experience with the following older CD players:

Sony CDP 620ES 86-87 $1000
Kyocera DA 410CX 87-88 $500
Denon DCD 3300 87-88 $1700

I just bought the Denon and still have the Kyocera but the Sony had had a harder life before I got it and I gave it away a couple of years ago.

All are very well built with the Sony and the Denon built like tanks.

The Kyocera is OK for a second system. At double the initial price and a year older, the Sony sounded a little better but still not as good as my Panasonic F-87 DVD player which its pretty decent and seems to go for about $100 on ebay.

The Denon though is surprisingly good for such an old player. It would make a great transport and as a CD player, it easily beats the Panasonic which is not as easy as you might expect.

Its interesting how prices have changed. The Denon's original $1700 list is about $2900 in todays dollars and now you can get one for relatively little money.

If I were you, for a CD player, I would settle for late 80s rather than early 80s as there is likely to be a big difference in sound quality and I would aim for one of the TOTL units, it won't cost that much anyway.

Regards

David
