I have a pair of Stax SR3 electrostatics that I use as a reference when assessing speakers. As they are driven by the amplifier's speaker outputs, they see the same signal as the speakers. In the past I have always found speakers I owned or tried were lacking in some way compared to the headphones even if the overall experience was more pleasing for typical listening.
I recently bought a pair of Snell E II speakers. These date from the mid 80's and are the design that the AudioNote Model E is based on.
After having the foam surrounds replaced, I compared them to the Stax and for the first time I did not feel I was missing anything at all.
This means that for me at least the Snell's are high end. Certainly they put a smile on my face.
