I have moved my turntable from a stand between the speakers to a Sound Organization wall shelf about 12 ft down the room. This sounds better though I have not tried it with the wall shelf between the speakers. The down side is that I need a long interconnect.
The overall set-up is
Turntable: Modified Rega with SME IIIs tonearm and Shure V15III cartridge.
Phono Pre: Yamaha C-80
Integrated Amp: Plinius 9100
Speakers: Snell E III plan to use Belden 1808a SVHS cable (17.3 pf/ft). This is the lowest capacitance cable I have found locally and as it contains 2 coax conductors in one cable, the WAF is good. http://bwccat.belden.com/ecat/jsp/Index.jsp?&P1=undefined&P2=undefined&P3=undefined&P4=undefined&P5=undefined&P6=undefined
I plan to use the Wireworld RCAs that they use on their “Upgrade†line. This appears to be the best low cost RCA that I can buy locally. http://www.wireworldcable.com/
If the interconnect is 20ft long, the capacitance will be about 350pF.
The output levels and impedance of the Yamaha C-80 are:
Rec Out: 150mV / 600 ohms
Pre Out: 1.5V / 47 ohmsThe inputs of the Plinius are:
Sensitivity: 290mV RMS for rated output at 1kHz
Impedance: 47 kohms
Overload: 5V RMSI am presently connected from the Rec Out of the C-80 to minimize the number of switches and gain stages in the signal path.
Moving the Plinius to a side wall to shorten up this interconnect is not desirable because; the remote only works well from in front, I would need a bunch of other long interconnects for my other components, and the Plinius would be just in front of a speaker as my speaker cables would only permit me to reach the start of the sidewall
Before I get the RCAs and make up the interconnect, I have the following questions:
1. Is this plan generally OK or should I do something different?
2. Would it be better in principle to connect from the pre out of the C-80? (Lower output impedance and adjustable gain but more gain stages and more old switches and pots in the signal path)
3. What should I regard as a maximum interconnect capacitance to aim for? Thanks for any help.
David
