In my mind, - there's a lot of good stuff going on. Maybe you'd think that i'm being overly positive.We have the really cool things that are going on with APL Hifi, Merlin, - (just not cause I own them). Empirical Audio, Wavelength, APL, are all working on trying to improve things like digital based, (ie downloadable)music; non media based. Tyler acoustics, Verity Audio, Von Schweikert, Hyperion, lot's of companies out there with talent and (many would assert, me being one of them), - and very, very, well designed speaker systems.
I also think that as the major labels begin to die and decay, musicians will be forced to find other alternatives. People like Peter Gabriel, Sting, Bjork, and many world and jazz musicians are starting to step up and are getting involved in what happens outside and after the recording: getting involved in the mastering, or being concerned about the quality of the sound of the final product.
Maybe I'm too optimistic....
