Getting the "live" experience

Coming back from a 7-day cruise, that had many live, small bands throughout the ship, I reflected back on my experience. The bands consisted of 3-4 members and the venue was located outside as well as inside the ship. All the instruments were amplified. I noticed that whereever I went, I could hear the music was live and not recorded, there were times when the bands weren't playing and they played recorded music through the same system, which I could tell. Now the equipments were all pro-type equipment that one usually sees in this type of venue, not very high end. But clearly all the set-ups were able to convey a live performance, even if listening outside at the other end of the ship. This then lead me to think about my high-end mega bucks equipment, why can't my system sound like that? The obvious difference was, the source was live vs recorded. Could I then conclude that our current commercial recording equipment, playback medium (ie: CD, LP, and tapes), playback equipment still has a long way to go before we get that "live" experience?
