I've looked into this and reached the following conclusions based on the fridges I have heard and the information I was able to get. From quietest to loudest
Sub Zero with remote compressor
Sub Zero with integral compressor
Kitchenaid Suberba - top Freezer
Kitchenaid Suberba - Side by Side
Other good model - Top Freezer
Other good model - Side by Side
Bottom Freezer arrangement - eg Amana
Inexpensive fridges generallySources of noise are the compressor, the condenser fan (if any) and the internal fan (if any)
Remote compressor removes the compressor and the condenser fan from the room.
Top freezer means that air inside the fridge can circulate by gravity or a smaller fan can be used. Bottom freezer requires the strongest internal fan. Side by side is in between.
In principle, the old style fridge with no internal fan, no auto defrost and no external condenser could be very quiet but this arrangement is generally only used in the cheapest fridges where there is no money spent on a quiet compressor. We went from an Amana with bottom freezer to a Kitchenaid side by side, mainly for noise reasons. I just found a Kitchenaid Top freezer for $100 in a Christmas day moving sale and I may swap it for the Side by Side as it sounds a bit quieter and with my 2 sons moving back home we are struggling for space in the side by side.
That's what I've found out for what its worth.
Hope that it helps
