Re: Llano Designs Trinity SX-3 Upgrade Amplifier (SS)

Pretty interesting stuff, this upgrade. I checked Llano Design's website (now very much under construction)to try and find out something about it. Completely gone is the range of both tube and solid state amps and preamps that the company had been producing. Replacing these is a hybrid power amp, which sounds like an s/s amp with a tube driver pre/driver stage -- nothing special really. The upgrade under review appears to replace the existing s/s driver stage. White's technical descriptions talks about the virtues of single-ended and class A design, but all nearly all amps use such designs, except for the current gain stage. He doesn't really say too much about the FET current gain stage in his "trinity" amp. Also, it appears that a preamp of similar design is coming.
Interesting . . .

For several years Van Alstyne has been selling a similar product, that he says is patented, he calls the "FET-Valve" amp. It even was reviewed in Sensible Sound (which at one time seems to have been a fan of Van Alstyne's products). Van A. also makes an "FET-Valve" preamp.

Also added to the site are some custom-made "cryogenic" speaker cables, tailored -- they say -- to just your particular amp/speaker combo. Secret stuff prevents them from telling you just how they do this . . .
