Home General Asylum

General audio topics that don't fit into specific categories.

Oil & Vinegar ...

Engineers and Audiophiles do not mix, though they do combine to provide the ocasional dressing to the Asylum smorgasbord.
I do not think they are capable of acting like each other - the Asylum is firmly rooted with audiophile paranoia (must I wipe my Cds with aluminium foil left-to-right or right-to-left, should I have my power outlets silver plated before, or after cryogenic treatment?), and Engineers are, well ... Engineers.
At this point I should admit that I am an Engineer by profession but, behind closed doors in a dimly-lit room, I am an Audiophile and never the twain should meet. Most, if not all, of modern life is successfully calculated and simulated, Shannon and Nyquist are undoubted, and the results are all taken for granted as low cost commodity items. And yet, as Don Giovanni refuses Il Commendatores's challenge who gives a toss about the dielectric constant of your interconnects as long as the hairs on the back of your neck stand up?
Yes, the truth is out the somewhere, but as Mulder and Sculley found out, when you find it everyone will stop watching. May it be a long time before an Engineer finds out how to give all amplifiers SET mid-range and Krell bass (and all for $0.50 component cost) because then the Asylum will cease to exist.

Until that day .....
