Many pre pros have an analog bypass mode and this will bypass the digital processing engine. What is not said is that the volume controls still work in the digital domain so A to D and D to A conversion still is used. As a digital volume control is turned down it starts to lose bits or resolution. Unless the volume is high, say 90% or above the sound will be compromised.
Not to sound like a salesman but.. the McIntosh MX132, and 134 run full bit on their processing and use digitaly controlled analog volume controls. In the pure analog modes the signal stays analog even when a sub is used as a secondary analog crossover is used. These units will keep the signal pure.
